LSD Drug Testing

LSD – also known as acid – is a Schedule 1 hallucinogenic drug that causes powerful changes in perception, mood, and thought.

Unlike many other drugs, LSD does not produce a traditional “high” but instead triggers intense sensory distortions and altered awareness, often referred to as a “trip.” These effects can last up to 12 hours and are highly unpredictable.

While some people may experience feelings of euphoria or spiritual insight, others report overwhelming side effects such as anxiety, paranoia, visual hallucinations, panic attacks, and disconnection from reality. In some cases, LSD use has been linked to lasting psychological effects, including flashbacks and hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD).

Although LSD is not physically addictive, its unpredictable effects and long duration can pose significant mental health risks, particularly in vulnerable individuals.

LSD is typically sold as small squares of blotter paper soaked in the drug, but it can also appear in tablet, capsule, or liquid form. The strength of each dose can vary widely, making it difficult to predict how someone will react.

Hallucinogenic drugs – also known as hallucinogens or psychedelic drugs – are substances that alter a person’s perception, mood, and sense of reality.

They can cause visual and auditory distortions, changes in thought patterns, and a distorted sense of time.

Examples of hallucinogenc drugs/hallucinogens include LSD, PCP (phencyclidine) and mescaline, all of which can produce intense hallucinations and unpredictable psychological effects.

LSD is most commonly used by taking it orally. It is usually sold as small squares of blotting paper that have been soaked in LSD and dried, with users placing this “tab” on or under the tongue.

LSD can also be found in liquid form, which may be dropped directly onto the tongue or added to sugar cubes or food. Less commonly, it may be taken as a tablet or capsule.

Unlike many other drugs, LSD is not smoked or injected, and even extremely small doses can produce powerful and long-lasting effects. Because the potency can vary significantly between doses, the effects are often unpredictable.

Even after the ‘high’ has worn off, and long after the drug was first consumed, LSD can be detected by a drug test, depending on the type of test you take.

The drug testing detection windows for LSD are as follows:

• Hair – up to 12 months (depending on the length of hair available)
• Nails – up to 12 months (up to 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails)

The rate at which hair and nails grow means that both hair drug testing and nail drug testing can provide a ‘wide-window’ of detection for drugs and their metabolites (up to 12 months).

The type of drug test you need depends on your circumstances, and how you intend to use the results of the test.

Hair drug tests and nail drug tests provide us with a wide window of detection (up to 12 months). This is due to the way in which drugs are retained in the hair and nails, long after substances were first consumed.

Hair drug tests can be used to identify a month-by-month pattern or an overview of drug use (segmented or overview analysis) for up to 12 months. Nail drug tests are ideal where hair testing is not possible, providing an overview of historic drug use up to six months (fingernails) or up to 12 months (toenails).
