How does the test work?
Any consumed drug circulates in the bloodstream.
These substances then pass from the blood vessels below the nail into the keratin fibres where they become trapped as the nail grows.
They can then be detected in the nail clippings.

Why nail testing?
Nail testing is an alternative when hair testing is not possible: the donor may have no or little hair, there may be religious reasons, or people may be concerned about their appearance.
Nail testing won’t give a historic segmented pattern of drug use (unlike hair testing) but it will give an overview of up to 12 months.

Sample collection
Samples of nail clippings would need to be collected under chain of custody conditions to support legally defensible results. This would require an appointment with one of our trained sample collectors at a place convenient to the donor.
Nails are collected as close to the nail bed as possible. If the nail is longer than 5 mm then only one would be required. Clippings may be needed from a couple of nails if the nails are short. Fingernails or toenails can be used for the test, but not a mixture of both. About 10 mg of nail is required in total.
