Hair drug testing
Hair drug testing is an extremely useful form of testing and can be used to support other methods such as oral fluid and urine testing.
It can be particularly useful for a more comprehensive overview of a person’s drug use as it is known as a ‘wide window’ form of testing, which can determine a history of drug intake for up to 12 months.

Oral fluid drug testing
Oral fluid drug testing is a method that can be used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their saliva and analysing it for particular substances.
An immediate negative result may mean that no further action needs to be taken, but a non-negative result will then undergo confirmation testing from the laboratory to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.
Oral fluid drug testing is known as a ‘narrow window’ form of testing as its period of detection is up to 48 hours, although this can depend on the particular substance taken.

Urine drug testing
Urine drug testing is used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their urine and analysing it for particular substances.
This form of testing can be particularly useful for on-site/point of care testing as an immediate negative result may mean that no further action is necessary.
A non-negative result may require confirmation testing from the laboratory in order to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.

Nail drug testing
Nail testing is ideal for those cases where hair drug testing is not possible (such as the donor has no or little hair, for religious reasons, and for those concerned with their appearance).
Unlike hair drug testing, nail testing won’t give a historic segmented pattern of drug use, but it will give an overview of up to 12 months.

How long a drug stays in the system depends on a number of factors, including the type of drug taken, the amount taken, how often it’s used, and a person’s weight and metabolism. The sample type used for testing (e.g. urine, hair, saliva, or nails) also plays a big role in how far back drug use can be detected.
Here’s a general guide to detection windows for different sample types:
- Hair – up to approximately 12 months, depending on the length and type of hair available
- Nails – up to approximately 12 months (up to 6 months for fingernail clippings and up to 12 months for toenail clippings)
- Oral fluid (saliva) – up to 48 hours after consumption
- Urine – up to 4 days after consumption

As the name suggests, these tests are for your peace of mind only. This means that the results are purely for your own personal information and cannot be used in legal proceedings.
We offer a range of flexible testing options to suit your needs.
Peace of mind tests
- For most of our peace of mind tests, you can collect your own sample at home with our easy-to-use at-home test kits. Simply follow the instructions included in your test kit to collect your samples and return them to our accredited laboratory for analysis.
- For tests that require an intravenous blood draw (collected from a vein in the arm), you have the option to book an appointment with one of our professional sample collectors at an address of your choice or at one of our walk-in centres. Alternatively, you can arrange your own sample collection at a time and location to suit you (via a trained nurse/phlebotomist).
Legal/court-admissible tests
- Our nationwide network of professional sample collectors can collect donor samples from any location in Ireland including homes, workplaces, prisons, hospitals, refuges, placement/foster homes, community medical facilities, contact centres or elsewhere.
- We also offer FREE sample collections for legally-instructed tests from our walk-in centres.

Hair drug testing, also known as hair strand testing or hair follicle testing, is considered the gold standard in toxicological analysis, but it is not always suitable for everyone.
Hair testing may not be suitable if:
- The person being tested has very little or no hair – in this instance, nail clippings may be used as an alternative sample type, offering a detection window of up to (approximately) 12 months for drug use (similar to hair)
- A shorter detection window is required – other methods like oral fluid or urine drug testing are more appropriate for assessing very recent drug use
