What is tramadol?
Tramadol – also known as Tramal or Ultram – belongs to a group of drugs called opioid analgesics, and is a powerful painkiller used in medical settings to treat moderate to severe pain. It can also be prescribed to treat long-term pain, where other painkillers are no longer effective.
While not as powerful as other opioids, like heroin, its effects are similar, and both substances can be addictive. Taking tramadol can make you feel calm, happy, and relaxed, and relieve symptoms of pain. However, it can also make you feel tired and lethargic, moody, irritable, and confused.
When legally prescribed, a doctor or other medical practitioner will carefully manage the prescription, to minimise the risks of long-term addiction.
What is tramadol used for?
Tramadol is used to manage moderate to severe pain, including chronic conditions like arthritis and post-surgical pain, by altering pain signals in the brain.
Can you take tramadol with other medicines?
Tramadol can be taken with certain medications under medical guidance. However, some combinations can increase the risk of serious side effects or complications, such as gastrointestinal side effects, liver damage, respiratory depression, overdose, addiction or excessive sedation.
It is strongly recommended that you consult a doctor before combining prescription tramadol with any other medications. Patients taking tramadol should also avoid alcohol due to the increased risk of dangerous sedation, respiratory issues or overdose.
Doctors may prescribe tramadol alongside medications such as paracetamol or low-dose amitriptyline for enhanced pain relief, but this would be carefully monitored and tailored to the individual needs of the patient.
