As a leading provider of legal drug testing for family law professionals, social workers, and local authorities, our award-winning laboratory routinely tests for a wide variety of drugs and their metabolites (breakdown products).

Yet of all the substances we test for at AlphaBiolabs, there are a handful that show up time and time again in legal drug test results. They are also widely recognised as some of the most misused substances.

In laboratory testing and in some legal settings, such as Family Court, these drugs are referred to using the acronyms MOCCA and MOCCA-B.

In this blog, we explain the meaning of MOCCA and MOCCA-B for legal drug testing, and why it is important to test for a combination of these substances when ordering a legal drug test.

What is MOCCA/MOCCA-B drug testing?

MOCCA drug testing refers to a drug testing panel comprising five of the most misused substances: methamphetamine, opiates (including heroin), cocaine (including crack cocaine), cannabis and amphetamine.

The term ‘MOCCA-B’ encompasses all these substances, with the addition of benzodiazepines.

If you are a family law professional or social worker ordering a legal drug test, we recommend testing for the MOCCA or MOCCA-B panel of drugs for several reasons:

Comprehensive assessment of substance misuse

A comprehensive drug test can provide clarity in circumstances where it is unclear which substance(s) an individual may have used. This is crucial where important safeguarding decisions need to be made, such as in child welfare cases.

Legal and treatment implications

The outcome of a drug test can have significant personal, social, and legal implications. Testing for a wide range of drugs ensures correct identification of these substances, enabling authorities to make important decisions in a timely manner. It also means that the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plans can be put in place in line with the substances that have been used.

Tainted drugs

Street drugs are often ‘cut’ with a variety of substances to create or enhance the desired effect of the high, without the knowledge of the person purchasing and consuming the drugs. This means that a comprehensive drug test might find ‘unexpected’ substances in the donor’s sample, that may not have been disclosed at the time samples were collected.
