If you’re the parent of twins, chances are you’ve been asked the question countless times: “Are they identical?”
It might seem like an easy thing to determine based on appearance alone – but telling whether twins are genetically identical (monozygotic) or non-identical (dizygotic) isn’t always straightforward. Many twins look alike, but only a DNA test can provide a conclusive answer.
At AlphaBiolabs, our Twin DNA (Zygosity) Test offers a fast, simple, and accurate way to find out whether twins are genetically identical or not. Whether driven by curiosity, health concerns, or a desire to better understand your children’s development, there are many benefits to seeking clarity through laboratory testing.
The science behind twin zygosity
At AlphaBiolabs, our Twin DNA Test is designed to determine the exact biological relationship between twins. We can test for three distinct types of twinning, each defined by how the twins are formed and how much DNA they share:
Types of twins we test for
-
Monozygotic (identical) twins
These twins develop from a single fertilised egg that splits into two embryos. They share 100% of their DNA, making them genetically identical. Despite this, environmental factors in the womb can cause physical differences, so identical twins don’t always look exactly the same. -
Dizygotic (non-identical) twins
These occur when two separate eggs are fertilised by two different sperm. They share around 50% of their DNA, the same as any other siblings, and can be the same or different sexes. Interestingly, some non-identical twins can appear very similar in appearance, leading many parents to assume they are identical. - Sesquizygotic (semi-identical) twins
This extremely rare form of twinning happens when a single egg is fertilised simultaneously by two sperm cells – a phenomenon called double fertilisation. These twins share more DNA than non-identical twins, but less than identical twins, making them genetically semi-identical.
Why DNA testing is the only way to know
Because of the complex ways twins can develop, and the variability in how genetics express themselves physically, appearance alone is not a reliable way to determine zygosity in siblings from multiple births.
- Identical twins may develop different features.
- Non-identical twins may look remarkably alike.
- Semi-identical twins may fall somewhere in between.
Only by analysing the twins’ DNA can we know for sure whether they are genetically identical, non-identical, or semi-identical.
It’s also important to note that our Twin DNA Test is not exclusive to twins. Despite the name, our test can be used to determine genetic similarity for up to five multiple birth siblings – simply select how many siblings you want to test at checkout. *

Why knowing matters
For many parents, finding out whether their children are genetically identical or not is about more than just curiosity – it can have real emotional, psychological, and practical significance.
Peace of mind and clarity
Not knowing your twins’ zygosity can lead to uncertainty, especially if they look very alike. A definitive answer provides peace of mind and allows you to confidently answer questions from friends, family, or healthcare professionals.
Supporting medical and health decisions
Knowing whether multiple birth siblings are genetically identical or not can be valuable in medical contexts, particularly when considering:
- Genetic conditions – if one sibling/twin is diagnosed with a hereditary condition, the other may carry the same risk.
- Organ donation and transfusions – genetically identical siblings/twins are perfect matches, which may be relevant in rare medical situations.
- Developmental assessments – in educational or psychological evaluations, understanding zygosity can help explain behavioural or learning differences.
Strengthening identity and understanding
As twins or multiple birth siblings grow up, knowing their genetic relationship can be important to their sense of identity. Some children find comfort in understanding their unique connection to their sibling, whether they are identical or not.
In cases of semi-identical twins – a concept many people are unfamiliar with – DNA testing may also provide valuable context that helps children and families better understand their genetic relationship.

Keepsake certificate
Included with every test is a zygosity certificate, confirming whether your twins are identical, non-identical, or semi-identical. Many families enjoy having this as a unique keepsake.
Certainty, delivered
When it comes to your children, having a clear answer can make all the difference.
Our Twin DNA Test provides fast, accurate insight into whether twins/multiple birth siblings are identical, non-identical, or semi-identical – something that physical appearance alone can’t reliably determine.
Many families have shared how valuable this clarity is, both emotionally and practically. One example is this review from a customer who purchased the test for her twin boys, having long been convinced that they were genetically non-identical.

“I wanted to put the question to rest: are my twins identical or not? So, I reached out to AlphaBiolabs, and they were incredibly helpful throughout the process.
“The test was quick and completely painless – just a simple cheek swab. We received our results the same day the samples arrived at the lab, which was really impressive!
“As it turns out, I’d had “mum goggles” on for five years. They are identical after all! It’s a fantastic service and now I can finally, confidently answer the question: “Are they identical?”
