Spice Drug Testing

Spice – also known as synthetic cannabis or K2 – is a Class B synthetic drug designed to mimic the effects of THC, the active ingredient in natural cannabis. It is often marketed as a legal or safer alternative to cannabis, but its effects can be far more unpredictable and dangerous.

While some people may experience feelings of relaxation or altered perception, others report severe side effects such as paranoia, hallucinations, aggression, seizures, and even psychosis.

It’s important to note that Spice is not cannabis. It contains synthetic cannabinoids – man-made chemicals that bind to the same brain receptors as THC but often with much greater potency and risk.

Spice is typically sold as dried plant material sprayed with these chemicals, often in colourful packaging under various brand names. However, the actual contents can vary widely, with unknown additives that increase the risk of overdose, addiction, and long-term mental health issues.

Spice is most commonly used by smoking it. The drug is usually sold as dried plant material that has been sprayed with synthetic cannabinoids, and users often roll it into a cigarette or joint, mix it with tobacco, or smoke it in a pipe or bong.

In some cases it is also vaped using e-cigarettes or other vaporising devices, although this method is less common.

Occasionally, Spice can come in liquid form, which may be added to herbal mixtures or used in vaping products.

Even after the ‘high’ has worn off, and long after the drug was first consumed, Spice can be detected by a drug test, depending on the type of test you take.

The drug testing detection windows for Spice are as follows:

• Hair – up to 12 months (depending on the length of hair available)
• Nails – up to 12 months (up to 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails)

The rate at which hair and nails grow means that both hair drug testing and nail drug testing can provide a ‘wide-window’ of detection for drugs and their metabolites (up to 12 months).

The type of drug test you need depends on your circumstances, and how you intend to use the results of the test.

We offer two types of drug test to detect Spice:

• Hair
• Nail

Hair drug tests and nail drug tests provide us with a wide window of detection (up to 12 months). This is due to the way in which drugs are retained in the hair and nails, long after substances were first consumed.

Hair drug tests can be used to identify a month-by-month pattern or an overview of drug use (segmented or overview analysis) for up to 12 months. Nail drug tests are ideal where hair testing is not possible, providing an overview of historic drug use up to six months (fingernails) or up to 12 months (toenails).  

If you require a drug test for legal reasons, or other official matters, you will need to instruct us for a legal drug test. For a legal drug test, samples are collected by a professional sample collector under strict chain of custody conditions, ensuring the test results are court admissible.
