GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate), also known by street names such as ‘G’, ‘liquid ecstasy’, or ‘Gina’, is a powerful central nervous system depressant that can produce feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and increased sociability. It is most commonly found as a clear, odourless liquid with a slightly salty taste and is sometimes used in club or party settings.
Despite its reputation as a recreational drug, GHB is extremely dangerous. Even small amounts can cause unconsciousness, seizures, breathing difficulties, or, in severe cases, death.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a depressant drug that affects the central nervous system.
Also known by the street names ‘G’, ‘liquid ecstasy’ or ‘Gina’, it is known for producing feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and increased sociability, and is sometimes used in club and party settings.
However, it is also a powerful sedative with a high risk of overdose and dependence.
The effects of GHB can vary widely depending on the dose, and even small increases can cause nausea, unconsciousness, seizures, or respiratory collapse. It is also widely known as a ‘date-rape drug’ due to its ability to incapacitate users, and its association with drug-facilitated sexual assault.
Because of its unpredictable potency and rapid onset, using GHB always carries serious health risks, especially when mixed with alcohol or other depressants.
GHB is typically sold as a clear, odourless, salty-tasting liquid, but it can also come in powder form.
It is usually swallowed, either on its own or mixed with a drink – often without the user’s knowledge (e.g. where a person’s drink has been spiked).
Even after the ‘high’ has worn off, and long after the drug was first consumed, GHB can be detected by a drug test, depending on the type of test you take.
The drug testing detection windows for GHB are as follows:
- Hair – up to 12 months (depending on the length of hair available)
- Nails – up to 12 months (up to 6 months for fingernails and up to 12 months for toenails)
The rate at which hair and nails grow means that both hair drug testing and nail drug testing can provide a ‘wide-window’ of detection for drugs and their metabolites (up to 12 months).
The type of drug test you need depends on your circumstances, and how you intend to use the results of the test.

Hair drug tests and nail drug tests provide us with a wide window of detection (up to 12 months). This is due to the way in which drugs are retained in the hair and nails, long after substances were first consumed.
Hair drug tests can be used to identify a month-by-month pattern or an overview of drug use (segmented or overview analysis) for up to 12 months. Nail drug tests are ideal where hair testing is not possible, providing an overview of historic drug use up to six months (fingernails) or up to 12 months (toenails).
If you require a drug test for legal reasons, or other official matters, you will need to instruct us for a legal drug test. For a legal drug test, samples are collected by a professional sample collector under strict chain of custody conditions, ensuring the test results are court-admissible.
