What do you need to collect a DNA sample?
Each AlphaBiolabs DNA testing kit contains:
- Full step-by-step instructions for how to collect your DNA swab samples and return them to our laboratory
- A self-addressed envelope to send your test samples back to us
- Collection swab packages each containing one swab
- Individual DNA test sample envelopes for each person being tested
You also need a clean place to collect your samples, and a pen to write your details on the front of the swab envelope.
How do you collect your DNA sample at home using a swab?
It’s important that your samples are collected properly, as incorrect sample collection will delay your test results.
We recommend collecting one person’s samples at a time to avoid any mix up.
Please DO NOT eat or drink anything immediately before collecting your samples.
- Complete the information required on the swab envelope BEFORE inserting the used swab.
- Using the swab provided, firmly rub on the inside of each cheek for at least 20 seconds and then immediately put the used swab into the swab envelope.
- Seal the swab envelope and check that all the details on the front have been completed.
- Repeat these steps for each person taking part in the test, using a separate swab and envelope for each individual.
Every person taking part in the test must also register their test by completing an online registration and consent form. Simply follow the instructions in your kit to register your test.
You will not get your results if you do not register your test samples online.
Do’s and don’ts when collecting your cheek swab DNA samples
DO
- Wash your hands before you collect your sample
- Remove any lipstick/lip gloss before collecting your sample
- Put your swab straight into the sample envelope after collecting your sample
- If collecting someone else’s sample, hold the swab stick as far away from the swab end as possible
- Send your samples back to the laboratory as soon as you have collected them
DON’T
- Eat or drink 30 minutes before collecting your sample – residual food on the swabs can cause mould or bacteria to grow, which can interfere with the test
- Remove the swab from the sterile packaging until you are ready to collect your sample
- Collect your sample from an area other than the inside of your cheek
- Put your swab on a surface before or after sample collection
- Put the swabs in plastic or sandwich bags before putting them into the sample envelope. The plastic stops the swabs from drying out, which can encourage microbial growth, and degrade the DNA
How do you make sure your DNA sample isn’t contaminated?
To protect your sample and ensure accurate test results:
- Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for at least 30 minutes before taking your swab.
- Do not share or reuse swabs between people.
- Keep swabs in their packets until you are ready to collect the sample.
- Avoid touching the swab tip or letting it touch any surface.
- Seal envelopes straight away after placing the swab inside.
Following these steps helps prevent cross-contamination, ensuring your results are clear and reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is collecting a DNA sample painful?
No. The cheek swab is simply rubbed inside the mouth – it’s quick, gentle and completely painless.
Can I collect my DNA sample at home?
Yes. Our kits are designed for easy, private use at home – no need to visit a doctor or clinic.
Can children or babies provide a swab?
Yes. For young children, gently rub the swab inside the cheek. It’s safe and non-invasive.
For babies that are breastfed, please try to collect samples before a feed rather than after as the presence of breast milk on the sample will cause a mixture of the mother and baby’s DNA to be observed and the sample will need to be recollected.
How long does it take?
The entire process takes just a few minutes per person.
Is consent needed for DNA testing?
Yes, consent is required from or on behalf of each person taking part in the test.
- Any person over the age of 16 must provide consent before their DNA samples can be used for testing.
- For a child under the age of 16, only parental consent is required to carry out the test. This consent must be given by a person with guardianship for the child.
- When testing the DNA of a deceased person, consent must be provided by the next of kin to retrieve a sample of their DNA for testing.
What happens if I make a mistake?
If a swab is dropped or contaminated, discard it and contact AlphaBiolabs for a replacement before continuing.
