Who’s the father? What to do if you’re not sure during pregnancy

Finding out you’re pregnant can be one of the most emotional moments in your life.

But if you’re unsure who the father is, those feelings of excitement may quickly become overshadowed by anxiety, fear, or uncertainty.

If you’re in this situation, know that you are not alone – and that there are safe, reliable ways to get the answers you need during pregnancy.

Advances in DNA science now allow you to establish paternity before your baby is born, using a completely non-invasive, highly accurate test. Whether you’re looking for peace of mind or hoping to move forward with confidence, a non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test can help you take control of your situation safely and discreetly.

In this article, we’ll explain why paternity doubts happen, how you can get answers while pregnant, and how AlphaBiolabs’ non-invasive testing can support you every step of the way.

How paternity doubts can happen

Uncertainty about paternity during pregnancy is more common than many people realise, and it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. Life is complex, and relationships don’t always follow a predictable path.

There are several reasons why someone might be unsure who the father of their baby is:

  • Overlapping relationships – Sometimes relationships or encounters happen close together, making it difficult to determine when the baby was conceived.
  • Reuniting with a former partner – You may have reconnected with an ex around the time of conception.
  • Unclear conception dates – Even with regular cycles, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly when you became pregnant.

Whatever the reason, the emotional weight of not knowing can be significant. You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward.

These feelings are valid, and the good news is that answers are available, without the need to wait until the baby is born.

Why waiting until birth isn’t always the best option

In the past, if you had doubts about paternity during pregnancy, you would have had to wait until the baby was born to get answers.

While paternity testing after birth is still an option, waiting that long can mean living with months of uncertainty – which can take a toll on your emotional well-being.

There are several reasons why getting answers sooner can be a better choice:

  • Emotional relief – Knowing who the father is can bring a deep sense of peace and reduce stress for both the mother and the possible father.
  • Better communication – Establishing paternity early can help open honest discussions between parents and allow for shared decision-making during the pregnancy.
  • Planning and preparation – Understanding your situation sooner means you can better prepare for your baby’s arrival; practically, emotionally, and financially.

With NIPP testing, there’s no need to spend your pregnancy in a state of worry or confusion. You can take steps now to get the clarity you need, safely and with confidence.

How a NIPP test works

AlphaBiolabs’ NIPP test offers a safe, accurate way to determine paternity during pregnancy, and is 100% safe for mother and baby. Here’s how the process works:

When can testing begin?

The test can be performed from as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy, meaning you can get answers as early as possible.

What samples are needed?

From the mother:

  • Two cheek (buccal) swab samples
  • One blood sample

From each possible father:

  • Two cheek swab samples
  • Simply choose how many possible fathers you need to test at checkout, and more swabs will be included with your test kit*

*Additional fees apply

What are the options for sample collection?

We provide two options for sample collection for this test:

  • FREE sample collection at one of our walk-in centres OR
  • Have one of our sample collectors visit you at a convenient time and location of your choice (+€149)

Once you have placed your order and chosen your preferred option for sample collection, our Customer Services team will contact you to arrange your sample collection appointment.

Can the samples be collected at different locations?

The mother and possible father(s) samples do not need to be collected at the same appointment. However, the samples must be collected around the same time.

This is because blood samples are time sensitive and must be returned to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection, along with all cheek swab samples. This reduces the risk of the mother’s blood sample degrading in transit, which can render the sample unusable.

How accurate is the test?

The test analyses the baby’s DNA – found naturally in the mother’s bloodstream from 7 weeks of pregnancy – comparing it with the DNA of the possible father(s), to identify matching DNA markers.

An AlphaBiolabs Prenatal Paternity Test is 100% accurate based on the samples we receive into our laboratory. We are also ISO 17025-accredited for prenatal paternity testing.

Things to consider before testing

Choosing to take a paternity test during pregnancy is a personal decision.

While the process is straightforward and non-invasive, there are a few important factors to think about before getting started.

Emotional readiness

The results of a paternity test can have a significant emotional impact – not just on you, but on your relationships.

It’s important to be emotionally prepared for whatever the outcome may be, and to have a support system in place if needed.

Involving the possible father(s)

Having an open, honest conversation with the possible father(s) can make the process smoother and help set healthy expectations, especially if co-parenting is a possibility.

Privacy and confidentiality

Prenatal paternity testing is an extremely sensitive subject, and many people do not want others to know that they’re taking a paternity test. This makes privacy and confidentiality a top priority when it comes to taking a DNA test.

At AlphaBiolabs, we’ve built our reputation on delivering fast, accurate, reliable testing while safeguarding every customer’s personal information.

Purpose of testing

AlphaBiolabs’ peace of mind NIPP testing can help you get the answers you need, but the results cannot be used for legal or official matters.

If you need a test for legal reasons (child maintenance or custody disputes), you’ll need a legal prenatal DNA test.
