Prenatal Paternity Testing: supporting child welfare cases

In child welfare and family court cases, establishing paternity at the earliest possible stage can be crucial for effective decision-making.

Social workers are responsible for ensuring that the best decisions are made for a child’s welfare. In cases where paternity is unclear, prenatal paternity testing can provide the legally recognised evidence needed to support early intervention, safeguarding assessments, and care planning before birth.

This blog explores how prenatal paternity testing works, its applications in child welfare cases, and the benefits of testing for social workers and families.

What is Non-invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) testing?

NIPP testing is a type of DNA test used to determine whether a man is the biological father of a baby, while the mother is still pregnant.

An AlphaBiolabs NIPP test can be performed as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy up to the point of labour, with only a blood sample from the mother and cheek (buccal) swab samples from the mother and possible father(s) required.

Unlike other methods of determining paternity during pregnancy (e.g. chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis) which carry a small risk of miscarriage, a NIPP test is non-invasive and 100% safe for mum and baby.

To perform the test, our in-house geneticists use the very latest scientific methods to extract the baby’s DNA profile from foetal DNA found in the mother’s bloodstream. This profile is then compared with the DNA profile of the possible father(s) to identify matching DNA markers.

If the tested man is the biological father of the baby, they will share DNA at every tested marker. If the tested man is not the biological father, this will not be the case.

Scenarios where social workers may need NIPP testing, include:

  • Where there are child protection & safeguarding concerns
  • For parental disputes during legal proceedings
  • Domestic abuse or vulnerability cases
  • Where there are multiple possible fathers

The benefits

The numerous benefits of NIPP testing for social workers and families include:

For social workers

  • Provides clarity in legal cases – Ensuring that case management is based on verified biological relationships, and that the correct father is involved in custody, financial responsibility, and welfare decisions.
  • Supports care planning – Ensuring the correct father is involved in child protection and guardianship discussions. Identifying the father early can also allow social workers to assess potential safeguarding risks and plan intervention strategies.
  • Prevents unnecessary delays – Helps avoid prolonged foster care or hospital stays for newborns awaiting legal determination.

For families

  • Reduces uncertainty and stress – Helping the mother and possible father prepare for the baby’s arrival (emotionally and legally).
  • Supports legal and financial planning – Establishing paternity early allows for discussions on parental responsibility, maintenance and inheritance rights.
  • Strengthens family relationships – Early confirmation of paternity can promote bonding and involvement from the father before birth.

The test is also useful for custody arrangements where the parents no longer have a relationship or the possible father is disputing paternity, ensuring arrangements can be made for custody once the baby is born.
