Prenatal paternity testing is an incredibly useful tool, making it possible to identify a baby’s biological father before the baby is even born.
In this blog, we break down what you need to know when ordering a prenatal paternity test, how the process works, and what samples are required for testing.
How does a prenatal paternity test work?
A non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test can be used to verify a child’s paternity while the mother is still pregnant, with only three samples required:
- Cheek (buccal) swab DNA samples from the potential father
- Cheek swab DNA samples from the expectant mother
- Blood sample from the expectant mother
During pregnancy, the unborn baby’s DNA is passed into the mother’s bloodstream via the placenta.
A NIPP test is performed by examining the baby’s DNA together with the parents’ DNA, to identify matching DNA markers.
If the tested man is the biological father of the baby, they will share DNA at every tested marker. If he is not the biological father, this will not be the case.
AlphaBiolabs is the only DNA laboratory in Ireland to hold ISO 17025 accreditation for prenatal paternity testing, and also offers the fastest results available (in just 5-7 days).
NIPP testing is 100% risk-free for mother and baby
Other forms of prenatal testing, which involve taking cells from the placenta (chorionic villus sampling/CVS) or extracting a sample of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis), pose a small risk of miscarriage. However, a NIPP test is non-invasive and completely safe for mother and baby.
An AlphaBiolabs NIPP test requires a blood sample and cheek swab samples from the mother, and cheek swabs from the potential father.
Simply order your test online or call our friendly Customer Services team on 01 402 9466 and we will contact you to arrange collection of the mother and potential father’s samples at one of our walk-in centres. This sample collection is included FREE OF CHARGE for our prenatal paternity testing.
Sample donors do not need to attend the same appointment. However, the mother and potential father’s samples must be collected around the same time to avoid any delays and reduce the risk of the mother’s blood sample degrading (as blood samples are time sensitive).
Your AlphaBiolabs sample collector will arrange the return of your samples from the walk-in centre to our laboratory for testing.
