Would you know if a loved one was taking unsafe prescription medication?
More than one million dosage units of illegal prescription drugs were seized in Ireland in 2024 – a 14% increase from the previous year, and a clear warning sign of a growing public health issue.
According to the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), there has been a sharp rise in the illegal importation of medications such as sedatives, anabolic steroids, erectile dysfunction drugs, and weight-loss treatments like semaglutide – often ordered online from unregulated sources.
These aren’t recreational drugs smuggled through back alleys. They’re medications people might assume are safe. However, when sourced illegally, they can carry serious and sometimes life-threatening risks.
The growing threat of illegally imported medications
The scale of illegal drug imports in Ireland paints a stark picture, with the HPRA warning consumers about the dangers of obtaining medications from unscrupulous sources.
Consumers are taking a risk with their health if they buy prescription medication online or outside of a regulated pharmacy, as they have no way of knowing whether it contains the correct active ingredient, or if it has been tested and approved for human use.
Key drug categories seized include:
- Anabolic steroids – often used without medical supervision for bodybuilding or performance enhancement, posing serious cardiovascular and hormonal risks.
- Benzodiazepines (sedatives) – including drugs like diazepam and alprazolam, which can lead to dependency and are particularly dangerous when used with alcohol or other depressants.
- Erectile dysfunction medications – frequently sold online without prescription, often containing undeclared or harmful ingredients.
- Weight-loss drugs – particularly semaglutide (commonly branded as Ozempic or Wegovy), which are increasingly being sought for aesthetic purposes without medical oversight.
These medications are often shipped directly to consumers from unauthorised websites, bypassing safeguards that ensure proper dosage, safety, and suitability.
Health risks and public safety concerns
Illegally imported prescription drugs pose serious health risks:
- Incorrect dosages: Many illegally sourced medications contain too much or too little of the active ingredient, increasing the risk of overdose or treatment failure.
- Undeclared or harmful ingredients: Counterfeit drugs may contain toxic substances or harmful combinations of medications.
- Lack of medical oversight: Prescription medications are designed to be used under medical guidance. Without a prescription and proper monitoring, these medications can lead to dangerous side effects or drug interactions.
- Risk of addiction: Drugs like benzodiazepines are highly addictive, and unmonitored use can lead to dependence and withdrawal.
Beyond the personal health risks, the strain on Ireland’s healthcare system is significant, from emergency interventions to long-term treatment for complications or addiction.
The role of drug testing in tackling prescription drug misuse
As misuse of illegally-obtained prescription medication becomes more widespread, drug testing has a key role to play in early intervention and harm reduction
- Peace of mind for families: A discreet drug test can provide clarity and help concerned loved ones address potential misuse early.
- Support in legal cases: In family law or safeguarding situations, drug testing provides essential evidence to support decisions about access, care and recovery.
- Workplace safety: Employers in safety-critical roles can use drug testing to ensure employees are not impaired, reducing risk and protecting the workforce.
Drug testing is a practical step toward understanding and resolving substance misuse, offering clear results that support better decisions and outcomes.
