Can you get a paternity test while pregnant?

Can you get a paternity test while pregnant? Everything you need to know

Finding out that you’re expecting a baby can be one of life’s most emotional and transformative experiences. But for some, the excitement of pregnancy can be accompanied by uncertainty, especially if you’re not sure who the baby’s father is.

If you find yourself in this situation, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Many people experience doubts about paternity during pregnancy, and these feelings are completely valid. You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what steps to take next.

The good news is that modern DNA testing means you don’t have to wait until the baby is born to find answers. Thanks to advances in genetic science, it is now possible to determine paternity during pregnancy, using a completely safe, non-invasive method.

AlphaBiolabs’ Prenatal Paternity Test offers clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind, from as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy, with non-invasive testing that’s 100% safe for mum and baby.

Whether you’re seeking answers for your own wellbeing, to support open communication with a partner, or to begin planning for your baby’s future, a non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test gives you the certainty you need at a time when it matters most.

Why uncertainty about paternity happens

Uncertainty about who the father is during pregnancy is more common than many people realise, and it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. Life and relationships can be complicated, and conception doesn’t always happen under ideal or predictable circumstances.

There are many reasons why someone might be unsure about paternity:

  • Overlapping relationships or encounters – Sometimes sexual relationships happen close together, making it difficult to determine when conception occurred.
  • Reconnecting with a previous partner – You may have rekindled a relationship with a former partner around the time of conception.
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or unclear conception dates – Even with regular cycles, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly when pregnancy began.

Whatever your personal circumstances, feelings of uncertainty can place an emotional strain on your pregnancy. You may be struggling with guilt, worry, or fear about the future. This can affect your mental health, your relationships, and even your ability to enjoy what should be a special time in your life.

It’s important to acknowledge these emotions, and to know that answers are available.

Why paternity testing during pregnancy can be beneficial

In the past, if you were unsure who the father of your baby was, you would have had to wait until after the baby was born to carry out a paternity test. While this is still an option, living with that uncertainty for the duration of your pregnancy can be emotionally challenging.

There are many reasons why finding out sooner rather than later may be the best choice for you and those around you:

  • Emotional reassurance
Getting clarity early on can ease anxiety and help you feel more in control of your situation. It can also bring peace of mind for the potential father, allowing both of you to move forward with confidence.
  • Open communication
Confirming paternity during pregnancy can make it easier to have honest conversations with the potential father and begin discussing shared responsibilities and expectations.
  • Practical preparation
Knowing who the father is can help you plan more effectively for your baby’s arrival, emotionally, financially, and practically.
  • Support for decision-making
For some people, paternity results may influence important decisions about the future. Having access to this information early in pregnancy can be empowering.

NIPP testing offers a way to get these answers safely, without any risk to you or your baby. If you’re experiencing doubt, you don’t have to wait. You can take steps now to find the clarity and reassurance you need.

Understanding the NIPP test process

AlphaBiolabs’ NIPP test provides a safe, accurate way to confirm paternity during pregnancy. The process is straightforward and designed to provide answers as early and easily as possible.

How does the test work?

From around 7 weeks into pregnancy, small amounts of the baby’s DNA can be found naturally in the mother’s bloodstream. Our expert geneticists isolate foetal DNA found in mum’s blood sample and compare it with the DNA from the potential father. If their DNA matches at multiple genetic markers, paternity can be confirmed with confidence.

What samples are required?

From the mother:

  • Two cheek (buccal) swab samples
  • One blood sample, which must be collected by one of AlphaBiolabs’ professional sample collectors

From the potential father(s)

  • Two cheek swab samples

You can select how many potential fathers you would like to test when placing your order, and additional swabs will be included in your test kit (additional fees apply).

Sample collection options

We provide two options for sample collection for this test:

  • FREE sample collection at one of our walk-in centres OR
  • Have one of our sample collectors visit you at a convenient time and location of your choice (+€149)

Once you have placed your order and chosen your preferred option for sample collection, our Customer Services team will contact you to arrange your sample collection appointment.

Sample donors do not have to attend the same appointment, but the mother’s blood and cheek swab samples and the potential father’s cheek swab samples must be collected around the same time.

This is because blood samples are time-sensitive and must be returned to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection, along with all cheek swab samples.

This reduces the risk of the mother’s blood sample degrading in transit, which can render the sample unusable.

When will I get my results?

You’ll receive your secure, password-protected results by email 3-5 business days after your samples arrive at our laboratory.

Common myths about prenatal paternity testing

Despite growing awareness of prenatal DNA testing, several myths and misunderstandings still prevent people from seeking the support they need. Here are some of the most common misconceptions around NIPP testing:

  • “Isn’t it dangerous for the baby?”
No. AlphaBiolabs’ NIPP test is 100% non-invasive and completely safe for mum and baby. It only requires a blood sample and cheek swabs from mum and cheek swabs from the potential father(s).
  • “I thought you had to wait until the baby is born to do a test.”
Not anymore. Thanks to scientific advances, you can now have a paternity test as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy, long before the baby is born. This allows you to get answers sooner and plan ahead with confidence.

Things to consider before testing

Choosing to take a paternity test during pregnancy is a deeply personal decision. While the process is safe and straightforward, it’s important to take some time to reflect on how the results might affect you and those around you.

Emotional readiness

Understanding your results can bring relief, but it may also carry emotional weight. Consider whether you have the right support in place, and don’t hesitate to talk to a counsellor or trusted friend if needed.

Communication with the potential father(s)

Deciding how and whether to involve the potential father(s) in testing can be challenging. Honest, respectful communication can make the process smoother.
