What is a Baby Gender Test?
AlphaBiolabs’ Baby Gender Test screens for the presence of the male Y chromosome in the mother’s blood from as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, with a proven accuracy of 99%.
The test is perfect for individuals or couples who are:
- Eager to start preparing for their baby’s arrival
- Curious about their baby’s gender before the routine 20-week scan
- Looking for a scientific, laboratory-based method for early gender prediction

How does the test work?
Every human being has a pair of sex chromosomes in each cell. The Y chromosome is present in males, who have one X and one Y chromosome, while females have two X chromosomes.
For a baby gender test, the mother’s blood sample is analysed by our in-house geneticists to determine if the Y chromosome is present.
- If a Y chromosome is detected, the baby is a boy
- If a Y chromosome is not detected, the baby is a girl

How soon can I take a baby gender test?
AlphaBiolabs’ baby gender test can be taken from as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, making it one of the earliest scientifically valid methods for determining a baby’s sex.
To ensure accurate results:
- Mum must be at least 6 weeks pregnant on the day of the sample collection to ensure any Y chromosome present in the blood sample is at a detectable level
- If collecting your own sample at home using our TinyTAP device, you must ensure that samples are collected exactly in accordance with the instructions provided in the test kit
The test is not suitable for women who have had a bone marrow/stem cell transplant or solid organ transplant from a male donor at any time OR a blood transfusion in the 3 months prior to testing.
