Anabolic steroid misuse and domestic abuse: Implications for Family Courts and safeguarding professionals

Anabolic steroid misuse and domestic abuse: Implications for Family Courts and safeguarding professionals

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are increasingly misused in Ireland, particularly among men using image- and performance-enhancing drugs.

While steroid misuse is often discussed in terms of physical health risks, its potential behavioural impact is increasingly relevant in family law proceedings.

For family law solicitors, barristers, and safeguarding professionals, this is especially relevant in cases involving:

  • Allegations of domestic abuse
  • Coercive or controlling behaviour
  • Sudden personality changes
  • Concerns about a child’s emotional or physical safety

Where steroid misuse is alleged, objective toxicology testing can assist the court by providing clear, scientifically robust evidence.

What are anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS)?

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic drugs designed to mimic the effects of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone responsible for muscle growth and the development of male characteristics.

The term “anabolic” refers to muscle-building effects, while “androgenic” relates to male sexual characteristics, such as facial hair and a deeper voice.

In Ireland, anabolic steroids can be prescribed for specific medical conditions, including:

  • Delayed puberty
  • Hormone deficiencies
  • Muscle-wasting conditions associated with serious illness

When prescribed at therapeutic doses and monitored by a clinician, the risk of severe psychological side effects is considered low.

Misuse and legal status

Under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2017, anabolic steroids are classified as controlled substances.

While they may be lawfully prescribed for legitimate medical purposes, the unauthorised supply or distribution of anabolic steroids is illegal.

Non-medical users often take doses significantly higher than those used clinically. Common patterns of misuse include:

  • Cycling – taking steroids for a period, stopping, then restarting
  • Stacking – combining multiple steroid types
  • Using doses many times above normal therapeutic levels

Data from the Health Research Board’s National Drug Treatment Reporting System (NDTRS) indicates ongoing treatment presentations involving anabolic steroids and other image- and performance-enhancing drugs.

Additionally, harm reduction services operated by the HSE continue to provide needle and syringe programmes accessed by people who inject steroids.

For legal professionals, distinguishing between medically supervised treatment and high-dose misuse is critical, with the latter being associated with behavioural effects.

To support legal professionals managing these complex cases, AlphaBiolabs is offering 20% off all legally‑instructed steroid testing until 31 May 2026.

Behavioural effects of anabolic steroid misuse

While AAS are widely associated with physical changes, their behavioural impact is equally important, particularly when used in high doses without medical supervision.

Steroid misuse has been linked to increased aggression in some users, with reported behavioural changes including:

  • Heightened irritability
  • Short temper
  • Hostility or confrontational behaviour
  • Impulsive or disproportionate reactions

The term “roid rage” is often used in the media, although it is not a clinical diagnosis. The severity of behavioural effects varies, but higher doses and prolonged misuse appear to increase risk.

Non-medical AAS use has also been associated with:

  • Mood instability
  • Periods of overconfidence or agitation
  • Anxiety or paranoia
  • Depressive symptoms during withdrawal

High levels of synthetic testosterone may affect emotional regulation and decision-making, potentially reducing an individual’s ability to manage conflict calmly.

Steroid misuse and domestic abuse: what is known

Domestic abuse is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors, and substance misuse – particularly alcohol and drugs – is already recognised within family courts as a potential risk factor.

According to figures from An Garda Síochána, domestic abuse callouts increased 45% between 2020 and 2024.

While no national statistics isolate steroid misuse within domestic abuse cases, the documented behavioural effects of high-dose use mean it may be relevant in certain proceedings.

Association with violent behaviour

Evidence from criminal justice settings has identified higher rates of violent behaviour among some individuals who misuse anabolic steroids.

These findings suggest that in a subset of users – particularly those taking high doses over prolonged periods –behavioural changes may increase the risk of aggression.

Importantly, steroid misuse often co-exists with other risk factors, including:

  • Alcohol misuse
  • Use of stimulants or other substances
  • Pre-existing personality traits linked to impulsivity
  • Relationship stressors

This reinforces the need for careful, case-by-case assessment rather than assumption.

Relevance in Family Court proceedings

While steroid misuse does not automatically lead to domestic abuse, it may be a relevant factor in cases involving:

  • Allegations of intimidation, physical aggression or coercive control
  • Evidence of escalating conflict within the home
  • Reports of unpredictable/volatile behaviour or sudden personality changes
  • Concerns about a child’s exposure to aggressive or volatile behaviour

In such circumstances, establishing whether anabolic steroids are being used may assist the court’s risk assessment.

Objective toxicology testing can assist the court by clarifying whether AAS misuse is present, reducing reliance on speculation and supporting proportionate, child-focused decision-making.

The role of steroid testing in legal proceedings

Legally-instructed steroid testing may be considered where:

  • Steroid misuse is alleged in domestic abuse proceedings
  • There are concerns about aggression linked to substance use
  • A party disputes steroid use
  • Local authorities require clarification during safeguarding assessments

The appropriate test will depend on the circumstances of the case. At AlphaBiolabs, we offer two types of testing for steroid misuse:

Drugs are retained in the hair and nails long after substances were first consumed, meaning hair and nail drug tests provide a wide window of detection (up to 12 months).

Hair drug tests can be used to identify a month-by-month pattern or an overview of drug use (segmented or overview analysis) for up to 12 months.

Nail drug tests are ideal where hair testing is not possible, providing an overview of historic drug use up to six months (fingernail clippings) or up to 12 months (toenail clippings).

Objective testing for steroid abuse can:

  • Clarify disputed allegations
  • Support risk assessments
  • Assist the court in making proportionate decisions
  • Reduce reliance on speculation

All AlphaBiolabs’ court-approved drug testing is conducted at our ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, under strict chain of custody conditions.

An evidence-based approach to risk and safeguarding

AAS misuse is not proof of domestic abuse. However, documented behavioural effects, including increased aggression and reduced impulse control in some users, mean it may be relevant in certain family proceedings.

For legal and safeguarding professionals, decisions must be guided by evidence rather than assumption. Establishing whether steroid misuse is present can support proportionate risk assessment and child-focused outcomes.

To support family law solicitors, barristers and social workers managing complex cases, AlphaBiolabs is offering 20% off all legally‑instructed steroid testing until 31 May 2026.
