AlphaBiolabs was delighted to attend the recent 31st Congress of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG), held in Montréal, Canada.
Our Director of Genetics, Casey Randall, represented AlphaBiolabs at this year’s congress, which brought together academics, researchers and forensic science professionals from around the world, alongside leading suppliers in the field.

Discussion points
The congress offered a wide-ranging programme of presentations, workshops and poster sessions, covering the latest developments across forensic genetics and DNA interpretation.
For Casey, several areas stood out as particularly relevant to our work:
- Kinship and relationship testing – Sessions exploring current developments and approaches in this area were especially valuable, offering insight into how the wider field may shape the future of relationship DNA testing
- DNA interpretation and the wider scientific context – Presentations covering broader developments in forensic genetics helped place AlphaBiolabs’ own work within the context of the global scientific community
- Poster sessions – A particular highlight, offering the chance to meet fellow scientists working in related fields, and hear directly about the research they’re conducting in their own laboratories
Beyond the formal programme, some of the most valuable exchanges came from informal conversations with delegates from different organisations and countries.
As Casey explains: “It was particularly encouraging to see so many people actively engaged in forensic genetics, and to have conversations about the different projects laboratories and researchers are working on. These informal discussions are often just as valuable as the formal presentations, as they provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.”

“Conferences like ISFG allow us not only to learn about new research, but also to share experiences, challenge our thinking, and bring new ideas back into the lab.”
