- Figures published by the Health Research Board (HRB) show that in 2021 alone, opioids were implicated in 68.9% of drug poisoning deaths, benzodiazepines in 52.8% and antidepressants in 35%.
- 4% of drug poisoning deaths involved multiple substances, underscoring the dangers of polydrug use.
- Benzodiazepines were the main problem drug in 11.3% of cases treated for problem drug use, according to HRB drug treatment data – an increase from 8.8% in 2015.
- The number of deaths where pregabalin was implicated – a drug typically prescribed to treat epilepsy, anxiety and nerve pain – increased almost fivefold from 2013 to 2021.
