Ireland has witnessed a concerning rise in the misuse of prescription medications in recent years, with more people becoming dependent on drugs that were originally intended to aid their recovery.
While substances such as opioids and benzodiazepines are prescribed to manage pain, anxiety, and other legitimate health concerns, their potential for dependency and misuse has led to widespread challenges for public health and addiction services.
At AlphaBiolabs, we have also noted a considerable increase in the number of test instructions issued for prescription medications.
In this blog, we examine the rising tide of prescription drug misuse in Ireland, the societal consequences, and how laboratory testing can be used to support recovery.
The stats on prescription drug misuse
The latest data paints a stark picture of drug misuse in Ireland, highlighting a concerning upward trend in the use of prescription medications alongside illegal substances.
- Figures published by the Health Research Board (HRB) show that in 2021 alone, opioids were implicated in 68.9% of drug poisoning deaths, benzodiazepines in 52.8% and antidepressants in 35%.
- 4% of drug poisoning deaths involved multiple substances, underscoring the dangers of polydrug use.
- Benzodiazepines were the main problem drug in 11.3% of cases treated for problem drug use, according to HRB drug treatment data – an increase from 8.8% in 2015.
- The number of deaths where pregabalin was implicated – a drug typically prescribed to treat epilepsy, anxiety and nerve pain – increased almost fivefold from 2013 to 2021.
Societal impact
The misuse of prescription drugs isn’t just a personal health issue, as it also has far-reaching effects on society and the economy.
Government reports show that drug-related public expenditure in Ireland spans across the justice, health and welfare sectors, with a significant portion going toward treatment and law enforcement.
There’s also a real human cost, with drug misuse leading to long-term illness, job loss and even premature death. Communities already facing disadvantage are often hit hardest, experiencing higher rates of drug-related harm, with fewer resources available to cope with them.
These ripple effects make it clear that tackling prescription drug misuse isn’t just about saving lives – it’s about supporting communities and relieving pressure on public services.
The role of drug testing
Effective drug testing can play a critical role in identifying prescription drug misuse, providing objective scientific evidence that can help families, legal professionals, social workers, local authorities, employers, and healthcare providers make informed decisions.
Regular drug testing can help:
- Confirm whether a person is taking prescribed medication as directed or misusing it
- Identify any additional substances being taken that may not have been disclosed
- Monitor for relapse – detecting any recurrence of drug use that could put a vulnerable person (e.g. a child) at risk
- Demonstrate compliance – providing documented evidence that a person is adhering to court-imposed conditions
- Provide reassurance to families and carers supporting someone in recovery
