Because a baby inherits DNA from both of its parents, this prenatal paternity test can identify if a man is the father of a baby by looking at samples containing:
- the man’s DNA
- the pregnant woman’s DNA, and
- the unborn baby’s DNA
The prenatal paternity test can be taken after the seventh week of pregnancy (5 weeks after conception). A blood sample is needed from the mother and two cheek swabs from the alleged father. The mouth swabs collect cells from the inside of his cheek and is a completely painless way of providing a sample of DNA for testing.
The advanced procedure works by preserving and analysing the baby’s DNA that is found within the mother’s bloodstream. This can be achieved because the baby’s cell-free foetal DNA transfers through the placenta to the mother’s blood. The mother’s blood sample must be collected by a medical professional, such as a nurse or a phlebotomist. The blood sample is then sent to our laboratory for testing as soon as possible to avoid the breakdown of red blood cells.
