Changing a Name on a Birth Certificate
What you need to know when changing a name on a birth certificateChanging a Birth Certificate
Most people do not realise that you can change some details on a UK birth certificate. Find out all you need to know below:
Did You Know?
- There is a six week deadline from when a child is born for the birth certificate to be submitted to a UK register of birth marriages and deaths.
- When an unmarried couple have a child, the father must be present at the birth and sign a declaration stating he is the father in order to be placed on the birth certificate.
- If the father has not signed a declaration he must prove that he is the biological father of the child.
- Legal DNA testing can be used to prove who the biological father is within these six weeks in order to be placed on the original birth certificate.
- If this is not proven within six weeks the father column will be blank on the birth certificate.
- Legal DNA testing can be used to prove who the biological father is after these six weeks for changing a birth certificate.
Our legal DNA testing is the fastest in the world, with next day results as standard, meaning that you can easily meet this six week deadline.
This also means that DNA testing to change a birth certificate will be provided with superfast results, without additional costs usually associated with express services.

Can Peace of Mind Testing be used for Changing a Birth Certificate?
Peace of mind paternity testing cannot be used for changing a birth certificate. Although the analysis process is just as accurate as our legal testing, when using DNA test kits that can be self-administered, the chain of custody is not maintained like it would be when utilising one of our fully trained sample collectors.
This means that with peace of mind testing it cannot be legally proven that who those who are intended to be tested were those providing the sample, meaning that the results cannot be used for legal purposes.
However, if you wish to conduct a paternity test or DNA relationship test to confirm what the outcome of the test would be before seeking legal advice or instructing legal DNA testing, using this form of testing for your own knowledge can be useful in this regard.
To clarify, if you wish to perform DNA testing to change a birth certificate, then you will require legal DNA testing.
Legal Advice for Changing a Birth Certificate
If an alleged parent believes they are a true biological parent of a child, then they may wish to seek legal advice. The solicitor will most likely advise them that they will need a legal DNA test to prove a biological relationship and in most cases a court will grant this request. At this point the court will assess whether they have regular contact with the child and the quality of the contact.
If a parent refuses to acknowledge that they are a biological parent of a child and another parent wishes to have them added for child support they should also seek legal advice.
DNA Testing for the Child Support Agency (CSA)
Providing proof of a biological relationship to a child, may be a requirement for a case involving the Child Support Agency.
AlphaBiolabs is the home of the fastest Legal DNA Testing in the world, with results provided the next working day that are accepted by the CSA and a number of other legal authorities.
We prioritise confidentiality and maintain the chain of custody throughout the entire process meaning that our legal DNA testing results are court approved and can be used for legal purposes.
In certain cases it is possible to use DNA testing for child support, as it can be used to prove whether someone is the biological parent of a child.
What Kind of CSA Cases is DNA Testing Useful for?
If an alleged father refuses to admit they are the biological parent and pay child support, DNA paternity testing may be used to prove that they are. If the results of the legal DNA test are used for the CSA, confirming that they are the biological father, it is likely that they will have to pay child support (possibly including past due / retrospective payments).
DNA paternity testing when a mother refuses contact to an alleged father, is another example of when this form of testing can be used for the CSA. The alleged father may wish to instruct a legal DNA test to prove they are the biological father to the CSA in order to gain contact to their child, or the mother may even instruct it in order to refuse contact.
These are just some of the examples that legal DNA testing can be used for the CSA. There may be cases where both parents need to prove they are the biological parents, or a close relative needs to prove their biological relationship to prove their rights as a guardian.
AlphaBiolabs provide DNA relationship testing for a great number of purposes, with results that are accepted by the CSA. If you require advice on what kind of testing will be suitable for your purposes please contact our friendly customer service on 0333 600 1300 or info@alphabiolabs.ie
