New figures from the UK Department for Transport (DfT) have highlighted a growing problem with drink-driving, reflecting an alarming trend that has also been seen on Irish roads in recent years.
The data from DfT shows that around 220 people were killed in 2020 during collisions involving a driver who was over the limit: a 13.1 per cent increase versus the previous 12 months.
The serious risk posed by drink-driving can also be seen in Ireland, according to research published in 2021 by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).
Figures released ahead of St Patrick’s Day – accompanied by a warning from the Garda and the RSA – showed that more than a third of deaths on Irish roads in recent years could be directly attributed to alcohol misuse.
The report, titled Road Deaths and Alcohol 2013-2017 looked at closed coroner files into road deaths.
Of those people who had alcohol in their system, approximately 62 per cent were driving the car at the time.
