Excessive alcohol consumption in Ireland has been shown to play a steady role in deaths related to drunken driving, suicide, assaults and domestic violence. In fact, alcohol is the cause of three deaths a day in Ireland, according to a 2016 report from the Health Research Board, and is a factor in 38% of all road fatalities. Binge drinking is prevalent among 39% of adult drinkers, according to a 2017 Irish Health Survey by the Central Statistics Office.
An innovative way of reducing alcohol abuse and maintaining sobriety is now available with SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® (SCRAM CAM®). This alcohol testing bracelet is worn on the ankle and monitors alcohol consumption by testing for the presence of alcohol in perspiration every 30 minutes. It is the first device of its kind to detect the drinking of alcohol in real-time. Results are automatically gathered and uploaded without the need for an individual’s participation. In this way, the frequency and pattern of alcohol consumption can be easily shown.
The use of these ankle bracelets is also known as sobriety tagging. This is because continuous monitoring has been proven to enforce participant sobriety, compliance and accountability. As such, SCRAM CAM® can provide local authorities, courts and child-protection agencies with the tools to change behaviours in vulnerable and higher-risk alcohol-dependent clients.

The waterproof and tamper-evident bracelets are being launched this month by Dublin-based AlphaBiolabs. Trained staff will fit the bracelets, monitor the results and provide reports after an agreed time period.
“This non-invasive method of testing for alcohol is unique and is ideal for those who dread blood tests, injections and needles”, said Managing Director David Thomas. “It also makes it easier to adhere to low or no-alcohol schemes because samples are taken on a continuous basis, every half hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
The state-of-the-art technology can differentiate between very low alcohol consumption (such as 1–2 units) and environmental alcohol sources. The data speak for themselves: on any given day, 99.4% of all participants are completely sober and compliant while being monitored with SCRAM CAM®.
“This is the most accurate and comprehensive method of measuring alcohol on the market”, said David Thomas. “A wealth of information is reported continuously in an easy-to-understand format.” For information on SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring® or any of AlphaBiolabs’ alcohol-testing solutions, please call 0140 29466 or email us at email@example.com
