Uncle DNA testing
Uncle DNA tests are often needed when the alleged father or mother is deceased or unwilling to take part in the testing and/or the uncle of the child would like to establish their biological relationship to the child. Our uncle DNA testing determines the statistical probability that a person is the uncle of a child. This type of DNA test is known as avuncular DNA testing.
When trying to determine an avuncular relationship the most conclusive method, if at all possible, is to test the parent of the child in question. In cases where the parent of the child is not available to provide a DNA sample, an avuncular DNA test can be carried out to determine the probability of the relationship.
Avuncular DNA tests are different from a paternity test which will always provide a conclusive result. When processing an avuncular DNA test, the laboratory will establish the DNA profile of the alleged relative and the child. An avuncular index is calculated using these DNA profiles.

We use state-of-the-art DNA technology to ensure the reliability and accuracy of our genetic testing. Our accredited laboratory also analyses up to 45 DNA markers: double the industry standard for DNA testing.
An Uncle DNA Test requires mouth swabs to be rubbed quickly and painlessly on the inside of the cheek, to collect cheek cell DNA for testing.
The test looks at up to 45 DNA markers, analysing the child’s DNA and comparing it to the potential uncle’s DNA, to determine whether a biological relationship exists.

What is the difference between the standard and the enhanced test?
Our standard uncle test is already industry-leading, as it analyses 25 DNA markers (the industry standard only analyses 16-21 markers).
What makes AlphaBiolabs unique is that we can also analyse up to 45 DNA markers. This allows more genetic material to be analysed, which strengthens the result and provides additional reassurance.
This is ideal for customers who want the most powerful DNA test available.
It is also particularly useful in tests of a more complex nature, such as an uncle test, where the chance of obtaining a conclusive result will always be lower than the more straightforward paternity or maternity tests.
